Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC will open Children’s Express Care–Monroeville this week, the hospital’s third Express Care center, where children and teens can receive convenient care after hours and on weekends for minor injuries and illnesses.

Children’s Express Care–Monroeville, located at Children’s East, opens Tuesday, July 19. Like other Children’s Express Care centers, the Monroeville location will be open from 5 to 9 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from noon to 8 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. No appointments are necessary ,and free parking is available on site. Most health insurances will be accepted, and copayments generally will be much less than for visits to emergency departments.

“Parents have told us they appreciate the convenient access to pediatric experts on evenings and weekends at our current Express Care centers and we look forward to expanding this service to the Monroeville area,” said Raymond Pitetti, M.D., medical director of Children’s Express Care. “We know that kids and teens need care from pediatric experts when pediatricians’ offices are closed and when their injuries and illnesses need immediate medical attention.”

Treatment at the new Monroeville location will include:

  • animal bites
  • bronchitis, pneumonia and asthma attacks
  • colds, fever, flu and other viral illnesses
  • cuts, bumps, lacerations, abrasions and splinters
  • ear, throat and sinus infections
  • earaches
  • incisions and abscess drainage
  • nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration assessment
  • rashes, poison ivy and allergic reactions
  • simple fractures, twists, sprains, strains and dislocations
  • splinting

X-ray services and a variety of other tests will also be offered at Children’s Express Care–Monroeville.

If a child’s injury or illness requires emergency care, Express Care patients will be transported to the Emergency Department at Children’s Hospital’s main campus in Lawrenceville, or referred to Children’s pediatric specialists. If Express Care patients require follow-up care, they will be referred back to their own pediatricians along with an update of the outcome of the visit.
