Performance Voice

Physicians and speech-language pathologists at UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh understand the importance of voice quality to young performers. We also understand the special needs of children and teens who use their voices for performance.

Children's Hospital provides comprehensive diagnosis and care for all types of singers and actors. Our singing voice specialists have a background in performing voice and are experienced in providing specialized treatment to children and adolescent performers of all training and experience levels.

Being a performer is not just about singing — it is about speaking too! Our rehabilitation of the performer’s voice includes learning how to use your voice correctly for both speaking and singing. Treatment focuses on learning about the anatomy and function of the larynx (voice box) and the importance of breath support. Therapy encompasses goals to improve voice quality, endurance, and prevention of further injury to the voice.
