Flushing a Catheter After Intestinal Transplant Surgery

When your child returns home after an intestinal transplant, he or she may have to use a catheter for a period of time. Below are some tips on how to flush a catheter.

Supplies you will need:

  • One (1) heparin syringe for each lumen
  • Alcohol wipes
  • Sharps container

How to do it:

  1. Gather all your supplies. Before you begin, make sure that your work area is clean, and then wash your hands.
  2. Clean the injection cap on the end of your catheter with a new alcohol wipe. Avoid touching the cap with your fingers, only the sterile alcohol wipe.
  3. Hold the syringe upright and push any air out of it.
  4. Attach the syringe of heparin to the end of the injection cap.
  5. Flush the catheter with heparin.
  6. Repeat steps 2-5 for each lumen.
