Awards and Recognition

Every day, UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh strives to improve on its quality, safety, and care. So, we feel grateful when we receive praise for our efforts.

UPMC Children's and its staff received the following awards:

  • U.S. News & World Report— We’re ranked nationally for 2024-2025 in all 11 pediatric subspecialties surveyed.
  • Magnet® Recognition for Nursing Excellence — In 2022, UPMC Children’s was redesignated a Magnet® organization for Nursing Excellence, a prestigious award granted to only 6% of hospitals nationwide by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). We were initially designated in 2012 and have been redesignated twice since.
  • “Top Children’s Hospital” by The Leapfrog Group — In 2022, we received this recognition from the Leapfrog Group in recognition of achievements in patient safety and quality. UPMC Children’s is one of only 12 pediatric hospitals in the nation named to this elite class.
  • Stage 7 Validation from the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) — In 2023, we were re-validated as a Stage 7 organization for HIMSS’ Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model (EMRAM) and Outpatient Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model (O-EMRAM). Stage 7 is the highest possible stage of data maturity recognized. The HIMSS assessments measure clinical outcomes, patient engagement and clinician use of EMR technology to strengthen organizational performance and health outcomes across patient populations.
  • LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality Leader by HEI — For the fifth year in a row, UPMC Children’s was selected as a Leader in LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality by Healthcare Equality Index (HEI). The 496 U.S. health care facilities awarded this title met key criteria, including patient and employee non-discrimination policies that specifically mention sexual orientation and gender identity, a guarantee of equal visitation for same-sex partners and parents, and transgender-inclusive healthcare benefits for employees.
  • ANCC Practice Transition Accreditation — UPMC Children’s has received accreditation for our Pediatric Advanced Practice Provider Program from the ANCC Practice Transition Accreditation Program (PTAP®). The PTAP® is widely viewed as the highest standard for residency or fellowship programs that transition registered nurses (RNs) and advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) into new professional practice settings.
  • Hospital of the Month by Children’s Hospitals’ Solutions for Patient Safety Network (SPS) — In December 2021, UPMC Children’s was recognized by the Children’s Hospitals’ SPS as “Hospital of the Month” for sustained reduction of preventable patient harm events, superb data submission of hospital-acquired conditions outcomes, and active support through participation in several SPS network events to develop and implement harm prevention strategies.
