Injury Prevention for Children and Families

Be Safe

It’s important to keep you, your children, and your home safe no matter the season, all year long. In the Injury Prevention section of our website we provide tips on preventing injuries and staying safe for both parents and kids. We also provide coloring and activity pages, quizzes, and safety cartoons for our younger visitors.

The Injury Prevention website was developed in collaboration with the University of Pittsburgh Consortium for Injury Research and Community Action (CIRCA). Originally funded by Edgar Snyder & Associates.

History

The Injury Prevention department at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh was developed in March of 2002 with a five-year grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation through the Injury Free Coalition for Kids. The goal of the coalition was to bring pediatric trauma centers across the country, and internationally, together to join forces to combat the leading cause of death and disability to children and teenagers. At the end of the five-year grant cycle the administration of UPMC Children’s integrated the department into hospital operations. The team has grown through the years and the program continues to expand and adjust to the needs of the community by utilizing injury data, research, and partnerships with the community and the national coalition to share resources. The Injury Prevention department is a valuable asset to Allegheny and surrounding counties, keeping kids and families safe every day.

Hard Heads Helmet Program

We educate children on the importance of wearing a helmet correctly, and at all times, while riding anything on wheels.
