Madi & Milo
When Madi was 18 months old, her nurse practitioner discovered a heart murmur during a regular checkup. After seeing a cardiologist and undergoing an EKG and echocardiogram, Madi was diagnosed with atrial septal defect (ASD), a congenital heart defect that causes a hole to form between the upper heart chambers. Madi would have to grow more before having surgery to repair the hole in her heart.
In the meantime, Madi’s condition was managed by cardiologist Megan McGreevy, MD, at UPMC Hamot. Leading up to her surgery, Madi was gifted a white stuffed puppy by her grandma. Madi named him Milo in honor of her family dog that had passed away. In July 2024, Madi underwent a cardiac catheterization procedure with Jacqueline Kreutzer, MD, at UPMC Children’s to repair her heart. Milo was by Madi’s side through her procedure and now goes everywhere with her.
With the support of her parents, two brothers, and Milo, Madi has made a wonderful recovery and has more energy than ever. She is back to doing her favorite activities, like coloring, playing with clay, and swimming. Madi follows up regularly with Dr. McGreevy to monitor her heart.
