Miller & Raph

Wherever Miller goes, Raph goes. A gift from his dad, Raph – a stuffed Ninja Turtle – has become an extension of Miller’s family and travels everywhere with him. From doctor’s appointments to wagon rides to surgery, Raph is always there to offer love and support.

During a 20-week prenatal ultrasound, Miller was diagnosed with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS), a congenital heart defect where the left side of the heart doesn’t develop correctly. Surgery for this condition is typically done in three stages. Performed by Victor Morell, MD, Miller underwent two surgeries to repair his heart before he was five months old. In 2023, Miller underwent his third procedure at the Heart Institute with Raph by his side.

Miller’s parents believe UPMC Children’s has allowed Miller to be the best little guy he can be. With his positive attitude, infectious humor, and resilience, Miller is looking forward to returning to preschool this year. He continues to have close follow up with his cardiologist Evonne Morell, MD, to monitor his heart function.
