At UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh an extensive orientation period for graduate nurses includes clinical time with competent preceptors along with blended learning experiences in the classroom.
The Blend Graduate Nursing Residency program was created to help transition graduate nurses from academics to the highly technical, specialized quaternary care setting. Classes and clinical orientation occur concurrently during the six-month period. This program was designed to:
- Transition new graduate nurses from novices to competent pediatric nurse clinicians
- Engage the new employee in his or her professional development
- Create a support network for new graduate nurses
- Decrease new graduate nurse turnover rates
