UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh has played an important role in the rapid progress of intestinal transplant techniques. Our surgeons have performed approximately 45 percent of intestinal transplants worldwide.

Intestine Program Highlights

  • UPMC Children’s has performed over 290 intestinal transplants since the program’s inception in 1990.
  • Children’s has a high patient survival rate of 88 percent at three years. The national average is 76 percent.
  • Children's hosts the only international symposium dedicated to the treatment of children with intestinal disease/failure through rehabilitation and transplantation: The Pediatric Intestinal Failure and Rehabilitation Symposium (PIFRS). The 13th bi-annual conference is scheduled for 2024 in Pittsburgh, Pa.
